7.8 HIGHpublic exploit available

Published 2026-10-06 · Updated 2026-10-07

AI risk analysis

Summary
Ghostscript can be tricked into executing arbitrary shell commands by parsing specially crafted PostScript or EPS documents, bypassing its security sandbox. This allows attackers to gain full control over the Ghostscript process and potentially compromise all data accessible to it.
Exploitability
Exploitation requires a user to open or process a malicious PostScript or EPS file, which can be delivered via email attachments, web downloads, or print workflows, making it moderately difficult but achievable with social engineering.
Blast radius
The impact could be significant across environments that use Ghostscript for document processing, including print servers, web applications, and automated document workflows, potentially leading to full system compromise.
Detection
No reliable host or network indicator is derivable from the published description.
Prioritized remediation
Upgrade to Ghostscript 9.56 or later to address this vulnerability.

NVD description

A flaw was found in Ghostscript. When Ghostscript renders a crafted PostScript or EPS document, it can bypass the -dSAFER sandbox and execute arbitrary shell commands in the context of the Ghostscript process. The issue chains memory corruption in document parsing with disabling of internal path access controls at runtime. An attacker can deliver the document directly or through formats that delegate rendering to Ghostscript (for example EPS import or print conversion workflows). Successful exploitation can compromise confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data accessible to the process running Ghostscript.
