CVE-2026-84317

8.8 HIGHpublic exploit available

Published 2026-10-12 · Updated 2026-10-13

AI risk analysis

Summary
Nginx UI allows authenticated attackers to bypass security controls that block dangerous Nginx directives like js_* and perl_*, enabling arbitrary code execution when the njs/perl modules are available. This affects deployments where the MCP tool is used to modify configurations.
Exploitability
Exploitation requires an authenticated MCP caller or a prompt injection attack against an MCP agent, making it moderately difficult but possible with existing access to the system.
Blast radius
The vulnerability can lead to full system compromise on deployments using the official Docker image where njs/perl modules are enabled, affecting all services running under Nginx UI's control.
Detection
No reliable host or network indicator is derivable from the published description.
Prioritized remediation
Upgrade to version 2.4.1 or later to fix the configuration validation bypass in the MCP tool's config_add.go component.

NVD description

Nginx UI is a web user interface for the Nginx web server. Prior to 2.4.1, internal/config/validation.go (ValidateConfigFile) is a security control that blocks dangerous nginx directives — js_*, perl_*, load_module of the njs/perl modules, and user root. It is enforced on three of the four config-write paths: api/config/add.go, api/config/modify.go, and mcp/config/config_modify.go. The fourth path — the MCP tool nginx_config_add (mcp/config/config_add.go) — does NOT call it: it writes the caller-supplied content straight to disk and reloads nginx. An authenticated MCP caller (or an MCP agent induced via prompt injection) can therefore inject exactly the directives the control is meant to block, leading to nginx code execution on deployments where the njs/perl module is available (e.g. the official Docker image). This issue is fixed in version 2.4.1.
