AI risk analysis

Summary
A template injection flaw (CWE-1336) in Amazon VEW's publishing component allows authenticated attackers to inject and execute arbitrary code via crafted CloudFormation templates, gaining the Lambda's IAM role permissions and compromising all tenant data.
Exploitability
Exploitation requires valid authentication and access to the versioning API, but is otherwise straightforward due to lack of input sanitization in the template engine.
Blast radius
An attacker can fully compromise any tenant’s data and infrastructure by leveraging the compromised Lambda’s IAM role across all projects.
Detection
Monitor CloudFormation template submission logs for unexpected or non-standard template directives (e.g., Fn::Sub, !Ref, or custom macros) in user-provided template bodies; alert on repeated or anomalous versioning API calls from low-privilege accounts.
Prioritized remediation
Redeploy Amazon VEW from the latest version of awslabs/virtual-engineering-workbench.

NVD description

Improper neutralization of special elements used in a template engine in the publishing component of Amazon Virtual Engineering Workbench (VEW) could allow a remote authenticated third party to run arbitrary code with the permissions of the publishing Lambda's IAM role. This could allow access to data and resources across all tenant projects. The code is reachable through a crafted CloudFormation template body containing template engine directives submitted through the product versioning API. To remediate this issue, users should redeploy from the latest version of awslabs/virtual-engineering-workbench.
